February 2004 Update

I was selected to be on
the Breeders' Committee. One
of the goals of the Breeders' Committee is to revise the TWHBEA
Registration/Blood Typing Kit Request and to revise the TWHBEA Color
Brochure. I am working on the draft of the new Color Brochure with the
support of the members of the committee. See my Feature Section TWHBEA
Color Registrations to read about color genetics information.
The Voice is the official publication of the
TWHBEA and has steadily improved on providing information on all the disciplines
in which the Tennessee Walking Horse is known to participate. In December,
it was decided to appoint a board to provide oversight for the Voice. I
don't understand exactly what the purpose of this board is except that it took
some of the editorial responsibility and now must review all things to be
published in the Voice. I do know that the editor P.J. Womble has recently
resigned. She has done an excellent job of putting out the Voice and will
be greatly missed.
Another thing that is new is that color gene
testing is here to stay and is being by both UC Davis Veterinary
Genetics Laboratory (Equine)
and Shelterwood
Laboratories. The prices offered for the tests are not very
competitive.
UC Davis offers the red factor/agouti
combined test for $50.00 and if you add the cream gene test it is $25.00 more
with a total of $75.00. A proposal is being prepared to offer a contract
with TWHBEA to provide the color gene tests to members for a much reduced
price.
Shelterwood Laboratories also offers the
tests individually at $35.00 each so the red factor and agouti gene test
together would be $70.00 and to add the cream gene test it would cost $105.00
which is $30.00 more than UC Davis would cost.
A new TWHBEA marketing slogan for 2004 is:
"Pick Your Sport, We
Have The Horse"
