Shelterwood: Coat Color
Testing

In the months before the meeting, I ordered blood
type kits and the microchips so I could have a means of positive
Identification on my small but elite herd of mares and my stallion. I
decided to take advantage of Shelterwood Labs advertisement on doing Color
Coat testing using the blood submitted for blood typing. The results were
shocking. The color tests on my two buckskins stated they were black with no
agouti, the bay mare's test stated she was a chestnut with a double agouti
and the palomino had a double agouti. I talked to the person who did the
tests and he said the tests don't lie.
Dr. Ketchem called Sharon Brandon and told her I had
mixed up the paperwork and they were redoing the tests. The new tests
confirmed I have two buckskins , a bay and a palomino. I also sent hair
samples to UC Davis to be retested because I wanted to be sure about the
presence of the agouti gene. The bay and one buckskin have double agouti and
the bay is homozygous for black. One buckskin has one agouti gene and both
are heterozygous for both red and black factors. The palomino has no agouti.
If this is an example of the percentage of errors
made by Shelterwood done on just my horses don't you wonder just how
accurate are their tests.
